US warns Iraq of 'difficult days' 30 June 2009
US warns Iraq of 'difficult days' Mr Obama described Tuesday's handover to Iraqis as a milestone, but said the country's leaders would face "hard choices" on politics and security. As Iraqis celebrated the US withdrawal, a car bomb in theNike air jordan 18 northern city of Kirkuk killed at least 27 people. In the past two weeks about 250 people have been killed in a wave of attacks. Iraqi and US troops have been on alert for attacks during the pullback. As Iraq marked the handover with a public holiday called National Sovereignty Day, President Obama said: "Iraq's future is in the hands of its own people." "The Iraqi people are rightly treating this as a cause for celebration. "The future belongs to those who build, not to those who destroy." Mr Obama predicted there would be more violence, like the Sobranie Cigarettes"senseless bombing" in Kirkuk. That came 10 days after a truck bomb killed more than 70 in the city's deadliest attack in over a year. "Make no mistake, there will be difficult days ahead," he said. He added: "There are those who will test Iraq's security forces and the resolve of the Iraqi people through more sectarian bombings and the murder of innocent civilians. "I am confident that those forces will fail. Today's transition is further proof that those who have tried to pull Iraq into the abyss of disunion and civil war are on the wrong side of history." Violent month Kirkuk, about 250km (155 miles) from Baghdad, was also the scene of two suicide bombings last month, in which 14 people were killed. The city is the centre of northern Iraq's oil industry, and homenike air jordan 3.5 to a volatile mix of Kurds, Arabs, Christians and members of the Turkmen community. Most of the other bombs that have killed around 250 people in the past fortnight have been aimed at Shia areas. Despite their pullback from cities and towns, US troops will still be embedded with Iraqi forces. On Monday, four US soldiers were killed in combat in Baghdad. The pullback comes two years after the US "surge" of extra troops between February and June 2007, which saw US troop levels in Iraq reach about 170,000. US-led combat operations are due to end by September 2010, with Lucky Strike cigarettesall troops gone from Iraq by the end of 2011. Some 131,000 US troops remain in Iraq, including 12 combat brigades, and the total is not expected to drop below 128,000 until after the Iraqi national election in January.

Army overthrows Honduras president, protests erupt29 June 2009
Army overthrows Honduras president, protests erupt By Mica Rosenberg TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - The Honduran army ousted and exiled leftist President Manuel Zelaya on Sunday in Central America's first military coup since the Cold War. Angry Zelaya supporters took to the streets and set up barricades. The dawn coup was strongly condemned by Zelaya's regional allySobranie cigarettes Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez -- who has long championed the left in Latin America. Chavez put his military on alert in case Honduran troops moved against his embassy or envoy there. U.S. President Barack Obama's administration, the European Union and a string of other foreign governments also voiced backing for Zelaya, who was snatched by troops from his residence and whisked away by plane to Costa Rica. Zelaya, in office since 2006, had upset the judiciary, Congress and the army by seeking constitutional changes that would allow presidents to seek re-election beyond a four-year term. Pro-Zelaya protesters, some of them masked and wielding sticks,Nike Men Dunk Mid set up barricades in the center of the capital, Tegucigalpa, and sealed off road access to the presidential palace. Congress named an interim president, Roberto Micheletti, who announced a curfew for Sunday and Monday nights. Honduras, an impoverished coffee, textile and banana exporter with a population of 7 million, had been politically stable since the end of military rule in the early 1980s. But Zelaya has moved the country further left since taking power and struck up a close alliance with Chavez, upsetting the army and the traditionally conservative rich elite. Zelaya tried to fire the armed forces chief, Gen. Romeo Vasquez, Nike air jordan 3.5 last week in a dispute over the president's attempt to hold an unofficial referendum on Sunday about changing the constitution to allow presidential terms beyond a single, four-year term. Under the constitution as it stands, Zelaya would have been due to leave office in early 2010. The country's top court said on Sunday it had asked the army to remove Zelaya. A former businessman who sports a cowboy hat and thick mustache, Zelaya, 56, told Venezuela-based Telesur television station that he was "kidnapped" by soldiers and barely given time to change out of his pajamas. He was later bundled onto a military plane to Costa Rica. Zelaya was to fly on Sunday evening to the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, to meet Chavez and other regional leftist leaders. The global economic crisis has curbed growth in Honduras, which Nike air jordan2.5 is heavily dependent on remittances from Honduran workers abroad. Recent opinion polls indicate public support for Zelaya has fallen as low as 30 percent. The army stood guard outside as Honduran deputies unanimously elected Congress head Micheletti, a member of Zelaya's own Liberal Party, as interim president until after the elections in November. Micheletti defied world pressure to reverse the coup, saying: "I don't think anyone here, not Barack Obama and much less Hugo Chavez, has the right to come and threaten (Honduras)." Honduras is a big coffee producer but there was no immediate sign the unrest would affect output. FOREIGN REACTION Chavez said he had put his troops on alert over the coup and would Jordan 3.5_shoes do everything necessary to abort the ouster. He said that if the Venezuelan ambassador was killed, or troops entered the Venezuelan embassy, "that military junta would be entering a de facto state of war, we would have to act militarily." He said, "I have put the armed forces of Venezuela on alert." Chavez has in the past threatened military action in the region but never followed through. The United States, the EU and a string of other governments condemned the coup. Obama called for calm. "Any existing tensions and disputes must be resolved peacefully through dialogue free from any outside interference," he said in a statement. A senior Obama administration official said later that Washington recognizes only Zelaya as president. The coup could be an early test for Obama as he tries to mend the United States' battered image in Latin America, a regional expert said. "This is a golden opportunity to make a clear break with the Vogue Cigarettespast and show that he is unequivocally siding with democracy, even if they (Washington) don't necessarily like the guy," former Costa Rican Vice President Kevin Casas-Zamora told Reuters in Washington. Honduras was a staunch U.S. ally in the 1980s when Washington helped Central American governments fight left-wing guerrillas. Chavez, who is known for his stridently anti-U.S. rhetoric and has in the past accused the United States of backing his own removal, said there should be an investigation to see if Washington had a hand in Zelaya's ouster. The White House denied any participation in the coup. The United States still has about 550-600 troops stationed at Soto Cano Air Base, a Honduran military installation that is also the headquarters for a regional U.S. joint task force that conducts humanitarian, drug and disaster relief operations. Democracy has taken root in Central America in recent decades after years of dictatorships and war, but crime, corruption and poverty are still major problems. Zelaya said the coup smacked of anVogue Cigarettes earlier era. "If holding a poll provokes a coup, the abduction of the president and expulsion from his country, then what kind of democracy are we living in?" Zelaya said in Costa Rica. The Supreme Court, which last week came out against Zelaya and ordered him to reinstate fired military chief Vasquez, said on Sunday it had told the army to remove the president. UPDATE 3-Oracle profit beats forecast, margin at record23 June 2009
UPDATE 3-Oracle profit beats forecast, margin at record * Q4 EPS ex-items 46 cts vs Wall Street view 44 cts * New software sales drop less than expected * Adjusted operating margin hits record 51 pct * Sees Q1 EPS ex-items at 29-31c vs estimate 30c * Shares rise 2.7 pct in extended trading (Adds outlook, comments on new products) By Jim Finkle BOSTON, June 23 (Reuters) - Oracle Corp (ORCL.O)Air Max Plus reported quarterly earnings above expectations as the No. 3 software maker's profit margin hit a record thanks to robust growth in its maintenance business, sending shares up 2.7 percent. The company run by billionaire Larry Ellison also reported a smaller-than-expected drop in new software sales and said it grabbed market share from SAP in certain segments -- signs that Oracle may be weathering the downturn better than rivals. "We've been able to push through the economic situation rather well and I have to tell you that I still see the pipeline growing rather significantly," Oracle President Safra Catz said in a conference call. Oracle's quarterly results and outlook beat expectations it setMax Tempo 2 Duke Blue Devils in March, when executives warned the recession and strong dollar would take a substantial bite out of profits. Since then, the economy has stabilized and the currency has weakened, setting Oracle up to beat those conservative estimates. Oracle executives were more optimistic on Tuesday, saying customers are telling the company they need to move forward in implementing new projects to keep their businesses running. Ellison cited customers as saying they want to spend more in the second half, but he added that remained to be seen. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Holt believed Oracle was taking customers away from German rival SAP AG (SAPG.DE) in the market for business management software as well as boosting share in its database business, where it competes with IBM (IBM.N) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O). "If they are able to gain share through the downturn then they willAir Jordan shoes 9 have stronger customer relationships as the economy improves," Holt said. New software sales, a closely watched revenue measure, fell 13 percent to $2.7 billion. Analysts had been expecting them to slide about 18 percent. Oracle reported profit, excluding items, of 46 cents per share in the fourth quarter, ended May 31, beating analysts' average forecast of 44 cents, according to Reuters Estimates. "It's all about expectations. Everything looks good across the board," said Goldman Sachs analyst Sarah Friar. Oracle said its adjusted operating margin was 51 percent, up 2.4 percentage points from a year-ago. Catz said much of the increase was due to growth in revenue from its highly profitable software maintenance business, which rose 8 percent from a year earlier to $3.05 billion. Customers buy annual maintenance subscriptions that entitle them to upgrades, bug fixes and technical support for about 22 percent of the original software cost. "We are not a cost-cutting story for the margins. We really are a Nike Men Dunk Mid profitability story for having such a large install base of customers," Catz said. She forecast that new software sales will fall between 4 and 14 percent this quarter, assuming current exchange rates. Catz also projected the company will post a profit, excluding items, of 29 to 31 cents per share this quarter, assuming current exchange rates, in line with analysts' average forecast of 30 cents. Analysts said Oracle's costs also benefited from the decline in new software sales because the company paid less in commissions to its sales staff, whose bonus targets were set a year ago when the economy was in better shape. Oracle reported net income fell 7 percent to $1.9 billion, or 38 cents a share, from $2 billion or 39 cents a year ago. Ellison said that his development team has completed writing code for the biggest revision of its business management software in the company's 32-year history. The product, dubbed FusionBenson And Hedges Cigarettes Apps, will be released next year. It will be sold as traditional software, but is also designed to allow customers to access a wide range of programs as services over the Internet, hosted at Oracle data centers. Although Ellison only briefly described the offering in the company's earnings conference call, his comments suggest that Oracle will soon have the widest range of programs delivered over the Web as a service. The company currently offers a limited selection of software in that area, where it competes primarily with Salesforce.com Inc (CRM.N) and Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O). Oracle's shares rose to $20.41 in extended trading. They hadGauloises Cigarettes fallen 0.5 percent to $19.87 on the Nasdaq. (Editing by Edwin Chan and Steve Orlofsky)

Republicans question cost of healthcare reform; Feinstein expresses doubt21 June 2009
Republicans question cost of healthcare reform; Feinstein expresses doubt Reporting from Washington -- Republicans today questioned the cost of healthcare reform plans, and even Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) acknowledged similar concerns and said she wasn't sure there are enough votes among President Obama's fellow Democrats to pass a plan at the moment. But the key reform supporter in the Senate called for patienceAir Max while lawmakers wrestle with an issue that has vexed them for decades. "If this were easy, it would have been done decades ago," Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.) said on ABC's "This Week." "Sixty years, the effort has been made to have a national healthcare program in this country." The back-and-forth echoed over the airwaves throughout the day. Obama has ramped up his effort to deliver on a promise of universal access to healthcare, and House Democrats hope to pass something before they adjourn for an August recess. The president wants to sign a solution into law in October. The path to that solution is narrowing, and proponents are Nike Men & Women Air Zoom Dunkestostruggling to find it. Opinion polls show popular support for expanding healthcare to the more than 45 million uninsured Americans, but they also indicate that people are worried about the cost. And the promised change won't come without a substantial price tag, as new estimates from the Congressional Budget Office highlighted. Democrats had hoped to craft a bill costing less than $1 trillion over 10 years, but the office's analysis suggested that the cost of one Senate measure could be closer to $1.6 trillion, and the other about $1 trillion. Appearing alongside Dodd, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) called the budget office's report a "death blow" to what he characterized as "a government-run health plan." Likewise, Sen. Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, ranking RepublicanAir Jordan shoes 5 on the Senate Finance Committee, said it may be time to scale back the most ambitious plans. "So we're in the position of dialing down some of our expectations to get the costs down so that it's affordable and, most importantly, so that it's paid for," he said on CNN's "State of the Union." "Because we can't go to the point where we are now of not paying for something when we have trillions of dollars of debt." Also on CNN, Feinstein called the question of cost "a very major and difficult subject." "I think there's a lot of concern inBarry Sanders Zoom Turf the Democratic caucus," she said. Dodd said he was ready for that fight. "We're not done with this," he said.

Is the Fed wearing so many hats it can't do its main job?18 June 2009
Is the Fed wearing so many hats it can't do its main job? By KEVIN G. HALL McClatchy Newspapers WASHINGTON -- Even before President Barack Obama outlined his plans this week to revamp the financial regulatory system and expand the powers of the Federal Reserve, the global financial Rothmans cigarettescrisis had turned the autonomous central bank into a new institution. The Fed has been in the forefront of efforts to combat the crisis, and that's made it a target for both criticism and worry. Concerns are only growing with the unveiling of Obama's plan. The fear is that the Fed has taken on so many missions that it may not be as capable as before of doing its main one: ensuring a growing economy with low inflation. It was the Fed that stepped up in September to rescue failed insurer American International Group. The Fed also stood alongside the Treasury Department in aggressively brokeringNike Men Dunk Low the sale of investment banks Bear Stearns and Merrill Lynch, institutions it didn't even regulate at the time. When credit markets seized up last year, the Fed stepped in to lend to corporate America, going well beyond its traditional role of lender of last resort to banks. The move provided needed credit and prevented the economic downturn from growing even worse. Today the Fed is increasingly taking bundles of residential and commercial mortgages on its balance sheet to help unlock the financing of mortgages and ease the housing slump. That's yetAir Jordan shoes 7 another move outside its traditional activity. The Fed's primary mission is to try to maintain full employment while ensuring that inflation is low. It does that through controlling the supply of money and credit available to the economy. That's "monetary policy." Yet the Fed's aggressive lending to fight the crisis has prompted fears that inflation will follow. "There are already questions in monetary policy about their ability to unwind these facilities they've put in place and reduce their asset holdings," said Alan Levenson, the chief economist for investment manager T. Rowe Price in Baltimore. "What if you need to tighten rapidly to contain inflation? Dennis RodmanAre you really going to be able to sell $400 billion or $500 billion (of mortgage securities), even if it disrupts the mortgage market?" For some former Fed board members, the expansion of the Fed's role in the economy is nothing short of breathtaking. "I think that they've shifted more from being a bank of last resort to right now a bank of first resort, and they're in essence helping to finance and keep afloat more than their traditional commercial banks," Susan Phillips, a Fed governor from 1991 to 1998, said in a recent interview. "Am I uncomfortable? Yeah, sure. I see them doing things I wouldn't have imagined 20 years ago," said Phillips, now the dean of the George Washington University School of Business. "Having said that, I think we're in a very difficult situation and I am very sympathetic to the need to keep the banking system afloat. I do Davidoff Cigarettesthink these are extraordinary times." Others see the Fed's evolution as necessary but potentially dangerous, "because Congress can now see that the Fed can do these things," said Larry Kantor, the head of global research in New York for Barclays Capital, a global investment firm. Kantor, a former Fed staffer, fears that lawmakers may try to politicize the Fed in the future by pressuring it to interfere in credit markets, such as to boost car and home sales or other forms of consumer credit. "People are more sensitive to anything that even smacks of usurping the Fed's independence, because of the road they've gone down," Kantor said. "It kind of opens a Pandora's Box." If the Fed's response to the financial crisis has been creative, it also has sometimes stretched its statutory authority to the edge. Some veteran Fed watchers believe it's also blurred theAir Max 360 line between independence and being an arm of the executive branch. "I think by the nature of its close cooperation on what I would call credit policy with the Treasury and various government agencies, the Fed is at risk of compromising its independence," Marvin Goodfriend, a finance professor at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, said in an interview. "The Fed is at great risk of compromising its perceived independence on monetary policy and its being the lender of last resort." Obama's proposal would further blur the question of the Fed's mission and independence. It would make the Fed a "systemic risk" regulator. The Fed would police a wide range of large jordan shoes 8financial institutions for any risks they might pose that could threaten the U.S. and global financial system. Fed officials think that their supervisory powers, which date back seven decades, haven't yet interfered with their ability to conduct monetary policy, and don't expect them to now. But enough questions are being raised that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, testifying before the Senate Banking Committee on Thursday, felt the need to allay concerns. "Our plan is to give it a carefully designed, modest amount of additional authority," Geithner said. He later contended that the broad range of changes being proposed to the financial regulatory structure actually would reduce chances of an unbridled Fed and would limit its overall powers. Some lawmakers weren't persuaded. Many are concerned that the proposed new powers could leave the Fed overextended and unable to conduct monetary policy properly. "To me, getting monetary policy right is a big job, and aR1 cigarettes crucial job," said Sen. David Vitter, R-La., during questioning of Geithner. Meanwhile, a House Financial Services subcommittee announced that it would hold a hearing on the Fed's independence. That suggests that House lawmakers too are pondering just what the Fed's evolution means. "I do think that's a legitimate question for people to be asking, and when legitimate questions are asked, we should build a legislative record that tries to answer those questions," said Rep. Mel Watt, D-N.C., the chairman of the subcommittee, in an interview. Originally set for next Wednesday, the hearing was postponedNike Men Dunk Mid until early July to avoid interfering with next week's meeting of the Fed's Open Market Committee, which sets interest rate policy.

North Koreans have made nuclear progress, experts say15 June 2009
North Koreans have made nuclear progress, experts say WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. intelligence community believes that North Korea tested a nuclear device last month with an explosive yield of several kilotons, considerably more powerful than its first test nearly three years ago. In a brief statement, the office of Director of National Intelligence Dennis Blair said, "The U.S. Intelligence Community assesses that North Korea probably conducted an underground nuclearAir Jordan shoes 15 explosion in the vicinity of P'unggye on May 25, 2009. The explosion yield was approximately a few kilotons. Analysis of the event continues." May's nuclear test was the second conducted by the North Koreans. The first in October 2006 had a yield of approximately a half-kiloton. At the time, U.S. officials and independent experts considered the test somewhat of a failure. U.S. and international nuclear experts had estimated that the Air Jordan 16latest test was in the 3- to 4-kiloton range. Former nuclear weapons inspector David Albright, the director of the Institute for Science and International Security, said the test shows that the North Koreans are "pushing their program along" and that they have "made progress." By comparison, the first atomic bombs developed by the United States produced an explosion equivalent to about 19 kilotons, or 19,000 tons of TNT, according to the U.S. Air Force. The U.S. atomic bombs dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 each generated explosions of more than 15 kilotons of TNT. A U.S. official said last week that there are indications the North Koreans "may be preparing" for another nuclear test. Albright said further testing could "significantly advance [Northjordan shoes 15 Korea's] nuclear weapons craft." Over the past several months, North Korea has also tested a number of short-, medium- and long-range missiles. The U.S. official said North Korea is continuing to try to improve its technology on the full range of weapons. "The more you conduct tests, the more you learn," said the official.

UPDATE 1-US lawmaker: BofA's Lewis inconsistent

* Fed documents discuss letter Lewis sought re Merrill * Kucinich says Lewis was seeking cover from shareholders * Lewis disputes nature of letter sought from regulators (Adds details from documents, byline) By Kim Dixon WASHINGTON, June 11 (Reuters) - A lawmaker is questioning Trainer Max 94the consistency of testimony by Bank of America (BAC.N) Chief Executive Ken Lewis, saying he may have perjured himself at a congressional hearing Thursday over whether he asked for explicit government backing for the takeover of Merrill Lynch. "He certainly put himself in legal jeopardy," Democrat Dennis Kucinich told reporters after the hearing into the deal by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee. At issue is whether Lewis asked for a letter ordering Bank of America to go forward with the deal, whether he recalls the request, or whether, as Lewis testified on Thursday, it was a request for something in writing to confirm government assistance for the deal would be forthcoming. The hearing was called to examine when Bank of America bank Shox Bella ILknew Merrill was on its way to a $15.84 billion loss, the government's role in the Jan. 1 acquisition, and $20 billion in taxpayer bailout funds the bank got later in January. Kucinich, who heads the committee's domestic policy subcommittee, cited email exchanges between several Federal Reserve officials including chairman Ben Bernanke and general counsel Scott Alvarez, discussing a bid by Lewis for a letter backing the Merrill deal. "I don't think it's necessary or appropriate to give Lewis a letter along the lines he asked," Fed general counsel Scott Alvarez wrote in a Dec. 23, 2008 email to Bernanke. "First, we didn't order him to go forward - we simply explained our views on what the market reaction would be and left the decision to him." An email from Bernanke to Alvarez says Lewis feared shareholderAir Jordan shoes 6 lawsuits if he did not pull out of the deal, with new information about Merrill's mounting losses. "He still asked whether he could use as a defense that the govt (government) ordered him to proceed for systemic reasons. I said no." In a Bank of America email dated Dec. 22, released by Republican staff on the oversight committee, Lewis wrote about a recent conversation with then Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson: "I just talked with Hank Paulson. He said there was no way the Federal Reserve and the Treasury could send us a letter of any substance without public disclosure, which, of course, we do not want. Ken" WHAT LETTER...? Early in Thursday's hearing, Kucinich asked Lewis whether he recalled asking for a letter "saying that the government ordered you to close the deal." Lewis replied that was "not what I asked for." "Our board was concerned that we had verbal assurances but had nothing in writing about getting some assistance. And so, I called Chairman Bernanke and asked him..." Lewis said, unablemonogram motard to complete the sentence before Kucinich cut him off. Reminded he was under oath, Lewis said: "I do not recall a letter." Later in the hearing, asked about the letter again, Lewis said he recalled "calling Chairman Bernanke and asking him if he could give us something in writing along the lines of -- of what the solution would be." To that Kucinich replied: "We're now updating Mr. Lewis' previous testimony." Kucinich contends the request for material in writing from the government shows the uneasiness Lewis had about the deal. If he had such concerns, he should have told investors earlier about concerns over Merrill's losses. "This is central because he was looking for a letter to hold himself harmless from having concealed from shareholders material information," Kucinich said later in an interview. Kucinich said the committee will need to interview Federal Reservejordan shoes 6 officials first to get the full story. Edolphus Towns, the Democrat who chairs the full committee, said he intends to summon Bernanke and former Treasury secretary Henry Paulson to a future hearing. "First we get the testimony from the Fed and then we make a decision about perjury," Kucinich said. A Bank of America spokesman, asked to respond to Kucinich's later comments, said Lewis' testimony spoke for itself. (Reporting by Kim Dixon; Editing by Tim Dobbyn)

Chrysler dealers scramble to unload vehicles8 June 2009
Chrysler dealers scramble to unload vehicles Peter J. Walsh, the owner of Walsh Dodge in Jersey City, N.J., started out selling used cars in his hometown 28 years ago after the birth of his daughter. He slowly built his business, and felt as if he'd finally made it when he earned his Chrysler shingle in 2000. But on Tuesday, Walsh Dodge will lose that shingle ¡ª as will 788 other dealers across the country. Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler has asked a bankruptcy court for permission to terminate theAir Max Plus franchise agreements of about 25 percent of its dealers. Chrysler needs to cut costs, and claims current sales levels don't justify a network of 3,189 dealers. For Walsh and the others on the "hit list," the last days of selling Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler vehicles have been filled with quick sales at deep discounts, along with sad goodbyes from longtime customers and feelings of dismay and anger toward the automaker they worked with for years. "It is what it is. It's just a tough situation," Walsh said, speaking inside his dealership Saturday morning. "It's been difficult mentally the past couple of months, but we'll be OK. I don't feel as bad for myself as I do for the young guys with families that work for me." Chrysler maintains that the franchises singled out for termination were chosen because they weren't profitable, didn't have all of the automaker's three brands under one roof, or were located too close to another Chrysler dealer. But the dealers argued in court that a smaller dealer base won't save the company any substantial money. They say the dealers cover their own costs, paying for everything fromAir Jordan shoes 7the vehicles on their lots to employees, advertising and tools. Walsh said that while Chrysler's products were good, its dealer support was always poor ¡ª too focused on the automaker's own short-term needs. And while he might have been underperforming some of Chrysler's sales criteria, Walsh claims some of that was the automaker's fault, pointing to its insistence that he sell more pickup trucks ¡ª a vehicle unsuited to the densely populated urban strip he serves across the Hudson River from New York City. "How many Dodge pickups can I sell in Jersey City? It's not Waco, Texas," Walsh said. A court hearing that began Thursday in New York with testimony from over a dozen dealers is scheduled to continue with legal arguments on Tuesday. U.S. Judge Arthur Gonzalez is expected to rule Air B Huaracheafter the arguments conclude. Steven Landry, Chrysler's executive vice president of North American sales, said Tuesday's deadline remains fixed. Dealers can sell the vehicles after that date, but they won't be able to offer Chrysler sales incentives, making it tough for them to compete. "We won't be changing any dealers on the list. We won't be changing the date," he said. Landry said Chrysler had commitments for the inventory of 42,000 vehicles on the lots of the affected dealers. Dealers have sold 16,000 vehicles to customers since the May 14 announcement and Landry said the remaining 26,000 cars and trucks would be purchased by remaining dealers. Chuck Eddy, a Youngstown, Ohio, dealer who was among those chosen to remain with Chrysler, said dealers have quickly bought up the inventory of those going out of business and are preparing for Jordan basketball shoes 3the transition. "I have no fire sale going on. There's no dealer in my town who was terminated having a fire sale," Eddy said. "People are buying the car for the true value." At the Viva Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge in El Paso, Texas, finance manager Jay Welsh said news of financial trouble with Chrysler and the upcoming terminations of other dealerships has done little to deter new car buyers. The dealership, which sells all three of Chrysler's brands and escaped termination, sold between 55 and 65 cars a month in April and May, compared with an average of about 25 cars a month in January, February and March, he said. A few buyers have questioned the viability of warranties, while others have been looking for "fire sale" prices that the dealership has yet to offer, he said. But other dealers said they moved quickly after finding out they were air jordan melo 1.5losing their franchise agreements, hoping to keep their losses to a minimum. By late last week, Dale Horn, owner of a Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep dealership in Malvern, Ark., had sold 30 of the 35 cars and trucks he had when the company told him that his franchise would be yanked. Horn said that in exchange for its help unloading the vehicles, Chrysler wanted him to sign papers allowing it to shop the inventory "at a figure less than it cost me." Instead, he decided to try to sell it all himself, taking losses on all but a few, while making tiny profits on the others. "In essence, I paid people to take some of my cars," he said. "It's just not a pleasant deal. If I'm as small as I am, having the problems that I'm having, I feel so bad for the guys thatEpique cigarettes have got 200 in inventory, or 300," he said. At other dealers, longtime customers have showed up to both buy a car and say goodbye. Janet Reuther Schopp, dealer and general manager at Reuther Chrysler Jeep in suburban St. Louis, said former customers and people she'd never seen before came in to help whittle down her already scaled-back inventory of 125 vehicles. "It was a huge show of respect for us," said Schopp, who continues a family business her father started 50 years ago. "They thought it was the right thing to do." A neighbor sent her niece in to buy. Her attorney bought two cars for himself and his wife. A stranger who lost his job made a point of driving out of his way to buy at Reuther and a Boeing Air Jordan shoes 8employee in St. Louis bought a car from her on principle. Nearly all of them paid full price. Mike Lobb, general manager of Dave Croft Motors, in Collinsville, Ill., outside St. Louis, will try to survive by selling used cars and running a service center, but still held out hope Saturday that a reprieve might come from Chrysler or the bankruptcy court. Croft, which normally has 350 new cars on the lot, is down to 100 vehicles. Eighty of his sales in the last three weeks have been to longtime customers. Walsh, the Jersey City dealer, said he has about 14 vehicles left, which he expects to be redistributed to other Chrysler dealers. He said he's glad he didn't take more vehicles when Chrysler officials were pushing dealers to help save the company by boosting their inventories this year. For Walsh, who plans to keep selling used cars, the move marks Air Max 360the end of Chrysler's slow painful demise for him. He had to reduce his work force from 30 people to 14 during the past year. And his sales of new and used vehicles have declined a third from their peak of 1,500 units a year in 2000, he said. "My employees have been with me an average of seven years ¡ª they're all local people ¡ª and it puts a hole in my heart when they come in here and I have to tell them I'm letting them go," Walsh said.

Sotomayor's confirmation backed by majority of Americans, poll says2 June 2009
Sotomayor's confirmation backed by majority of Americans, poll says Reporting from Washington -- One week into the nation's introduction to Judge Sonia Sotomayor, a majority of Americans surveyed said they approve of her confirmation for the Supreme Court. Slightly more than half -- 54% -- said they would like to see the Senate confirm the president's first nominee for the nation's highest court, according to the results of a Gallup Poll releasedmonogram denim today. Just 28% of those surveyed said they opposed Sotomayor's confirmation, and 19% had no opinion, according to the poll conducted Friday through Sunday. The figures are similar to the level of support that Gallup initially found for previous Supreme Court nominees who were confirmed by the Senate, including justices Clarence Thomas, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Samuel Alito Jr., Gallup said. Americans showed slightly more support for the appointment of Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. "Initial public support has been a good barometer of the public's jordan shoes 11eventual judgment of the nominees," Gallup's Jeffrey Jones reported. "The percentage favoring a nominee's confirmation generally has not varied much in either direction from the time of nomination to the time of confirmation." Sotomayor, a member of the U.S. 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals in New York, was making her first rounds of Capitol Hill today for her upcoming Judiciary Committee confirmation hearings. President Barack Obama wants his nominee ready for the Oct. 5 start of the court's fall session. Public opinion about Sotomayor skewed along party lines. A majority of Republicans surveyed, 57%, opposed her nomination. A slim majority of independents and a solid majority of Democrats favored it. Most Americans surveyed -- 60% -- said they were closely followingAir Jordan shoes 15 news about Sotomayor's nomination. Much of the limited public controversy over Sotomayor has focused on a couple of comments: In a speech at Duke University in 2005, Sotomayor asserted that the federal circuit courts make public policy, and in a speech at UC Berkeley in 2001, she implied that a female Hispanic judge might have more wisdom than a white male judge on some matters. Some Republicans, notably radio talk show commentator Rush Limbaugh and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, have suggested that her comments disqualify her. Others -- most notably the Senate's Republican leaders -- have been more cautious about casting judgment on a nominee who brings strong legal credentials and historical significance. Sotomayor is poised to become the first Latina member of the nation's highest court. "So far, despite the news about [Sotomayor's] statements, AmericansAir Max 03 do not view Sotomayor as an extreme nominee," Gallup noted. Just 28% of respondents believed she would be "too liberal" as a Supreme Court justice, while 48% viewed her as "about right," and 49% said they believed that Sotomayor's views are "in the mainstream." "The historical data also suggest that Americans' first impressions generally predict the ultimate Senate vote -- the two nominees who did not garner majority support from Americans on their initial reading did not wind up as Supreme Court justices," Gallup's Jones noted of Robert Bork, who was not confirmed, and Harriet Miers, who withdrew her nomination. "All those who were favored by a majority were confirmed, regardless ofChesterfield cigarettes the specifics of their confirmation processes," he said. The results came from a survey of 1,015 adults with a possible margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Gates Issues Warning to North Korea31 May 2009
Gates Issues Warning to North Korea SINGAPORE — Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates warned North Korea on Saturday that the United States would not accept it as a nuclear weapons state, as Asian security officials struggled to find a new way to deal with the isolated Communist nation. “We will not stand idly by as North Korea builds the capability to wreak destruction on any target in Asia — or on us,” Mr. Gates told a major defense conference here that has been Gauloises cigarettesdominated by North Korea’s test this week of a nuclear device and the firing of at least six short-range missiles, all in defiance of international sanctions. Mr. Gates said that he did not consider North Korea’s nuclear program “a direct military threat” to the United States, but added that its progress “is a harbinger of a dark future.” One of the chief concerns among United States officials is that North Korea will sell its nuclear technology. Although Mr. Gates said that the administration was planning to discuss with its Asian allies how to move forward with the six-party talks aimed at persuading the North to give up its nuclear weapons program, he acknowledged during a question and answer session that “it would be hard to point to them at this Air Jordan shoes 20point as an example of success.” In Washington on Saturday, a senior American official confirmed South Korean news reports of indications that the North was preparing to ship an inter-continental ballistic missile toward a missile testing site on the Sea of Japan, a sign that Pyongyang might be planning another long-range missile test. It would likely take several weeks for the missile to reach the site and be put in place, and there is still no evidence that the North Koreans have the technology to create a nuclear device small enough to fit atop a missile. The North Koreans have conducted two such tests before, including one over Japanese territory, and American officials are particularly concerned about Japanese reaction to another test. Such missiles are theoretically capable of reaching Alaska and Hawaii. A C.I.A. assessment has concluded that North Korea has built one or two nuclear weapons and harvested the fuel for six or more weapons. Throughout the day at the annual conference in Singapore, called Air Jordan 11the Shangri-La Dialogue, Mr. Gates met with defense officials from China, South Korea, Japan and other Asian nations to try to begin pulling together an international consensus on how to proceed. James B. Steinberg, the deputy Secretary of State, attended a number of the meetings, as did Dennis C. Blair, the director of national intelligence. There was talk of toughening economic sanctions on North Korea and a widespread view that long-running six-nation talks aimed at getting North Korea to give up its nuclear program had failed. Beyond that, nothing specific emerged. “There’s no prescription yet on what to do,” said a senior American defense official who asked for anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly. The official said that one “prudent option” was “what should we be thinking about in the event that we need to start enhancing our posture, our defenses?”air jordan X But the official said that it was premature to talk of building up American forces in the region — an echo of comments from Mr. Gates on Friday that the United States had no plans to reinforce some 28,000 American troops based in South Korea. Late in the day, Mr. Gates had a three-way meeting focused on North Korea with the defense ministers of South Korea and Japan, a precursor to more detailed discussions to occur next week in Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing about North Korea’s nuclear test. Mr. Steinberg is to lead the American team at those meetings; the group will include Stuart Levey, the Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, an indication that tough economic measures against North Korea will be a significant part of the discussions. Military officials traveling with Mr. Gates said the tough talk was aimed in large part at increasing worldwide pressure on North Korea as well as reassuring allies in the region, particularly Jordan basketball shoes 6Japan and South Korea, that the United States was committed to their defense should North Korea make good on its talk of war this week. On Wednesday, North Korea threatened military strikes against the South. Mr. Gates met early on Saturday with the highest-ranking official sent to the conference by China, Lt. Gen. Ma Xiaotian, the deputy chief of the general staff of the People’s Liberation Army. American Defense officials said after the meeting that China, the country that has the most influence over North Korea, clearly viewed the nuclear test seriously, a reflection of General Ma’s public remarks at the conference. “We are resolutely opposed to nuclear proliferation,” General Ma said, adding that “we hope that all parties concerned will remain cool-headed and take measured measures to address the problem.” The United States has been pressing the Chinese government for a tough response, but it remains unclear if China is willing to engage in a heightened showdown with North Korea. In the past, ChinaAir Max 180 TR+ has feared the collapse of North Korea’s government could lead to refugees pouring across its border. In Moscow, the Kremlin issued a statement saying President Dmitri A. Medvedev and Prime Minister Taro Aso of Japan had agreed on the need for a serious response to the nuclear test, Reuters reported. In Mr. Gates’ formal remarks at the conference, his first as an emissary of President Obama, he made clear that the new administration had limited patience with North Korea’s bellicose words and behavior. “President Obama has offered an open hand to tyrannies that unclench their fists,” Mr. Gates said. “He is hopeful, but he is not naïve. Likewise, the United States and our allies are open to dialogue, but we will not bend to pressure or provocation.” Military officials acknowledged that the United States had only limited information about what was really happening inside North Korea and suspected that its leader, Kim Jong-il, was inKarelia cigarettes the midst of political maneuvers to make his youngest son, Kim Jong- un, his successor. The officials described the country’s leadership as unpredictable and bizarre. Although North Korea was the “hot topic” at the conference, as Mr. Gates put it, the defense secretary also used the forum to appeal to Asian allies for help, both financial and military, with the war in Afghanistan. “I know some in Asia have concluded that Afghanistan does not represent a strategic threat for their countries, owing in part to Afghanistan’s geographic location,” Mr. Gates said. “But the threat from failed or failing states is international in scope.” The defense secretary said that extremists in Asia who have engaged in terrorism in Bali and guerrilla warfare in the Philippines “are inspired by, and at times have received support directly from, groups operating along the Afghanistan- Pakistan border — the ungoverned space from which this threatAir Jordan shoes 19 ultimately emanates.” Failure in Afghanistan, Mr. Gates said, “would have international reverberations — and, undoubtedly, many of them would be felt in this part of the world.” In representing Mr. Obama, Mr. Gates sought to draw a distinction between the new president and his predecessor. Mr. Gates noted that Mr. Obama had spent part of his childhood in Indonesia and that it was the first time “that we have had a president with such a personal connection to the region.” Mr. Gates concluded that the United States, “in our efforts to protectAir Jordan 12 our own freedom, and that of others” had “from time to time made mistakes, including at times being arrogant in dealing with others.” Mr. Gates did not name names, but then said, “We always correct our course.”

Obama picks Bolden for NASA

So, it looks like manned spaceflight may yet have a future at NASA, with the selection this weekend of former astronaut Charlie Bolden to head the troubled agency. Bolden nike jordan 1would be the agency¡¯s first black Administrator. The LA Times talked to NASA insiders, who said Bolden wouldn¡¯t have taken the job if President Obama hadn¡¯t given his support for manned flight. Key to the selection of Bolden over Obama¡¯s first choice - retired Air Force Maj. Gen. J. Scott Gration - was Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.), who flew with Bolden on his first shuttle flight. ¡°I trusted Charlie with my life ¡ª and would do so again, ¡± Nelson said. The open question now is whether Obama and Bolden willjordan shoes 7 keep Bush¡¯s plans to return men to the moon - and eventually Mars - or not.

Industries are Grappling With New Bill on Climate 20 May 2009
Industries are Grappling With New Bill on Climate

WASHINGTON -- The "American Clean Energy and Security Act" is one of the most ambitious efforts to re-engineer American social and economic behavior in decades, presenting risks and opportunities for a wide array of businesses from Silicon Valley to the coal fields of the Appalachians. The legislation, better known as the Waxman-Markey bill, isn't yet law and has big hurdles to clear. A critical vote looms this week in the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Bond cigarettesBut even with its chances of passage uncertain, the measure has become the basis for debate in Washington over how the U.S. should respond to pressure to slash its carbon emissions. At a White House meeting Wednesday, members of President Barack Obama's Economic Recovery Advisory Board endorsed the central idea of the 900-plus page measure -- to cap carbon emissions and require businesses to buy tradeable permits to pollute. The measure could create "green" jobs in the U.S. while reducing harmful pollution that might be causing global climate change, executives in the group said. They included General Electric Co. Chief Executive Jeffrey Immelt, who sat next to the president. Mr. Obama said he's "excited about the opportunity" to develop such a system and that "we've seen some great progress this week" in the U.S. House of Representatives. The bill has been put forward by U.S. Reps. Henry A. Waxman,Air Jordan shoes 1 (D., Calif.) and Edward J. Markey (D., Mass.). It's prospects look good in the House, but it could face a tougher time in the Senate. Still, the bill is the most viable yet to tackle climate change. If adopted, it would confront big sectors of the economy with potentially costly challenges. The bill requires that emissions of carbon dioxide, methane and other gases linked to climate change be cut by 83% from their 2005 levels by 2050, long after most current members of Congress will have left office. The planned reduction is all the more ambitious considering that U.S. greenhouse gas emissions grew by 17% between 1990 and 2007. To drive businesses and power generators to use less oil and coal and slash emissions of other gases, the Waxman-Markey bill would make businesses acquire pollution permits, which they could jordan shoes 1use to cover their emissions and sell any spares. The current draft of the bill would give away up to 85% of those permits over the next 20 years. Still, instituting a cap and trade system would start the process of putting a price on emitting carbon dioxide. The bill's supporters say that is enough to start driving the technological innovation and investment needed to move away from fossil fuels. "Putting a price on carbon is the most important thing we can do," Silicon Valley venture capitalist John Doerr told reporters after the meeting of the president's advisory board. Mr. Doerr, a partner at, Kleiner, Perkins, Caufield & Byers, is one of a number of tech figures who have invested some of the wealth they earned during the Internet boom in clean-energy ventures that could get a boost from the Waxman-Markey proposal. Critics of Waxman-Markey, most of them Republicans but also some Democrats, say it is a tax by another name applied in a complex and costly way. A Congressional Budget Office analysis of climate change policy estimated that price increases associated with a 15% cut in carbon dioxide emissions would cost the average U.S. household $1,600 a year.nike shox r4 new The CBO analysis said low income households would shoulder a larger burden, as would families in coal dependent regions such as the Ohio Valley. Harvard University economics professor Martin Feldstein questioned during the meeting with Mr. Obama whether the price might be too high for U.S. consumers, but said giving away too many pollution credits to utilities could undermine the goal of reducing emissions. "You have to raise the price to consumers to get them to cut back," Mr. Feldstein said. "I have a hard time understanding the give-away strategy." Lawmakers say they would compensate consumers for the added burden through tax credits and direct government subsidies. The Waxman-Markey bill would use the states to funnel monthly payments to low-income households, defined as those eligible for food stamps or with gross income up to 150% of the poverty line. But the Waxman-Markey bill is more than just cap and trade. The proposal would establish requirements that utilities buy at least 12% of their electricity from renewable sources such as windmills, solar panels and geothermal technology. Another section promotes "large scale" programs to spur demand forcheap cigarettes electric vehicles with incentives for buying plug-in cars and building charging stations. The proposed bill offers auto makers several forms of assistance to make the shift to lower-carbon cars. They include as much as $50 billion in loans under an Energy Department program to spur advanced vehicle development and up to $4 billion for subsidies to consumers who trade in older vehicles for more efficient models. In addition, auto makers would get 3% of the free pollution nike jordan 1allowances through 2017 and 1% from 2018 through 2025 -- tied to investments in electric vehicles and other advanced technology. The proposal would offer rebates to spur demand for appliances that are not only energy efficient, but also come equipped with "smart grid" technology that would allow a dishwasher to know the most economical time of day to run based on variable electric rates. Retailers would get incentives to push highly efficient appliances to consumers. The act would order the Department of Energy to see to it that building codes are amended to make new buildings 30% more efficient by 2010 and 50% more efficient by 2016. The act would even establish new efficiency standards for "portable light fixtures," also known as lamps.

51% identify as 'pro-life' in U.S.16 May 2009
51% identify as 'pro-life' in U.S.

At a time when President Obama is trying to convince opponents in the abortion battle that they can find middle ground -- in rhetoric, if not reality -- a new Gallup Poll shows that more Americans describe themselves as "pro-life" than "pro-choice." For the first time since it began asking the question in 1995, Gallup reported Friday, a majority of adults questioned for its annual survey on values and beliefs -- 51% -- said that Wholesale cigaretteswhen it comes to abortion, they consider themselves "pro-life"; 42% consider themselves "pro-choice." (The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 3 percentage points.) This represents a significant shift, Gallup noted. As recently as last year, 50% of respondents called themselves "pro- choice" and 44% identified themselves as "pro-life." Moderate and conservative Republicans accounted for the change; Democrats' attitudes toward abortion remained constant. "It is possible," Gallup said in its analysis, that the president "has pushed the public's understanding of what it means to be 'pro-choice' slightly to the left, politically." Regarding abortion restrictions, the largest proportion of Americans supports legal abortion only in certain circumstances -- as has been true since 1975 -- according to Gallup. This yearcheap cigarettes the figure is 53%. At the ends of the spectrum, the number of people who think abortion should be illegal in all circumstances has risen, to 22%, and the number who think it should be legal in any circumstances has fallen, to 23% -- a virtual tie. In the previous few years, people who opposed all restrictions outnumbered advocates of a total ban by a wider margin. Still, said Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America: "I am pretty confident that Americans really don't want Roe v. Wade overturned." The larger number of Americans calling themselves "pro-life," she said, "doesn't square with what has happened in the last several elections." Keenan cited the rejectionWholesale cigarettes of abortion bans by voters in politically conservative South Dakota in 2006 and 2008, and the failure of five other antiabortion ballot measures in California, Oregon and Colorado since 2005. But antiabortion activists think they have more than the new poll on their side. "This isn't new," said Charmaine Yoest, president of Americans United for Life. "It tracks pretty much with what we've always known: People generally are pro-life depending on how you ask the question." The poll comes at a delicate moment for Obama, who campaigned saying abortion should be "safe, legal and rare." During his first three months in office, he took a number of steps that infuriated abortion foes. For example, he lifted abortion restrictions on foreign family-planning groups that receive U.S. funding, and he ended President George W. Bush's ban on embryonic stem cell research. But Obama has tried at times to appease opponents of abortion rights. Last month, he backpedaled on a campaign vow to enact the Freedom of Choice Act, which would guarantee the right to legal abortion even if Roe vs. Wade were overturned. He now says the cheap cigaretteslegislation is not a priority. But Yoest said abortion foes were not placated. "There has been such an avalanche of pro-abortion activity that it's jaw- dropping. It's not just that his rhetoric doesn't square with reality; the gap is Grand Canyon-size. I think this administration has fundamentally miscalculated how out of step they are with the American people."

Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi to Face New Charges 14 May 2009
Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi to Face New Charges

A lawyer for Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi tells VOA's Burmese Service that the military government is putting the Nobel Peace laureate on trial Thursday. Lawyer Kyi Win says Aung San Suu Kyi and her two maids were to be taken to Rangoon's Insein Prison for the trial. He was not told the specific charges they would face, but said the caseSpecial Offer cigarettes was apparently in connection with a secret visit by a U.S. citizen at her residence in Rangoon. U.S. national John Yettaw was detained by police last week for gaining access to Aung San Suu Kyi's home and staying there for two days. On Wednesday, the Burmese authorities granted U.S. consular access to Yettaw for the first time since his arrest. The U.S. State Department said Wednesday that Yettaw has not been charged, nor have the Burmese authorities provide information on the next steps in his case. The European Union expressed concern about Aung San Suu Kyi's health after the detention of her personal physician, and called on Burma's military government to immediately provide her with proper medical attention. An EU statement urged Burma to halt systematic torture and Wholesale cigarettesdenial of health care to prisoners. The EU also called for the release of all political prisoners. The 63-year-old Nobel Peace laureate has been under house arrest for 13 of the past 19 years. Her current term is due to expire at the end of this month, but Burma's military government has rejected an appeal to free her. Human-rights group "The Assistance Association for Political Prisoners" warned this week that Aung San Suu Kyi and 18 other political prisoners are in urgent need of medical care. The group said many of the more than 350 political activists imprisoned in Burma since last October have been sent to remote prisons that lack medical facilities

In space, Europe gets ahead of U.S.10 May 2009
In space, Europe gets ahead of U.S.

WASHINGTON -- The world's astronomers are about to get a trio of powerful new eyes on the sky that can see better and farther than existing space telescopes. As a result, Europe will hold a scientific and technological lead over the United States in some key areas of cosmology, at least for a while. On Monday, NASA will send a crew of astronauts to install greatly improved instruments on the 18-year-old Hubble Space Telescope. Just three days later, the European Space Agency will Nike Men Air Force 1 Highlaunch two even more advanced telescopes, named Planck and Herschel. The American and European launchings will be ''right on top of each other,'' said Jon Morse, the director of NASA's Astrophysics Division. If all three instruments work as planned, scientists will be able to look back almost to the birth of the universe 13.7 billion years ago. They could detect the first stars and galaxies, and prove -- or disprove -- theories about what happened in the first seconds after the ''big bang,'' when cosmologists think that everything began. DIFFERENT VIEWING Each of the three telescopes ''sees'' things in a different wavelength of the electromagnetic spectrum. It's like looking through different windows on the cosmos. Hubble sees mostly in optical light, the narrow band between infrared cheap cigarettesand ultraviolet that's visible to human eyes. Herschel will collect photons -- particles of light -- in a much wider infrared wavelength. Planck detects even longer microwaves, which carry photons left over from the big bang. The three telescopes will study ''different pieces of the universe,'' said Ray Villard, Hubble's news director. ``They're complementary.'' Herschel will have the largest mirror ever put in space, 11.5 feet across, half again as big as Hubble's mirror. Planck will have the sharpest vision, detecting differences as small as two parts in a million. Hubble, meanwhile, is better able to study galaxies, stars and planets beyond our solar system. To save money, ESA will launch Planck and Herschel atop a single Ariane 5 rocket from the European spaceport in French Guiana, on the coast of South America. They'll travel separately to a point 900,000 miles away, where they'll enter a yearlong orbit around the sun. THREE-YEAR PERIOD Herschel, named for British astronomer William Herschel, the discoverer of Uranus, will sweep the entire sky every six months over a three-year period. It will build the most accurate map everNike Men Air Force 1 Low made of the cosmos. Because light from very old and distant objects is stretched out toward the red end of the electromagnetic spectrum, Herschel's infrared vision will let it see stars and galaxies as they were forming billions of years ago. The best American infrared telescope, NASA's 5-year-old Spitzer Space Telescope, has a much smaller mirror -- 2.8 feet -- and a narrower viewing range than Herschel's. ''Herschel is big brother to Spitzer,'' Villard said. ``Herschel does everything Spitzer does, but does it better.'' The Planck satellite is named for Max Planck, a famed German physicist of the last century. Because it detects microwaves, Planck will study tiny ripples in the cosmic microwave background, a curtain of hot plasma shrouding what happened before the universe was 380,000 years old. Astronomers think that these irregularities formed the seeds of future galaxies. ''Planck will provide the deepest, clearest, sharpest and leastNike Women Air Force 1 Low Mid High obstructed view of the beginning of the universe ever seen,'' said Benjamin Wandelt, a Planck scientist at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. It will be ``a quantum leap in our ability to address fundamental questions about how the universe began.'' Planck is 10 times more sensitive and has three times the resolution of the best American microwave telescope, the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe, which was launched in 2001. Planck can detect temperature differences as small as one 10-millionth of a degree.

How Big Can The Kindle Get?7 May 2009
How Big Can The Kindle Get?

Yesterday, Amazon launched its larger-format Kindle DX with a built-in PDF reader and partnership deals with textbook and newspaper companies. Today, Wall Street analysts are weighing in on what kind of impact the DX might have on Amazon's numbers. Barclay Capital's Doug Anmuth estimates that the DX alone could add $800 million in revenues and $100 million in gross profits in 2012. Total Kindle revenues in that year for both the smaller Kindle 2 and the Kindle DX will be be $3.7 billion, he estimates, with gross profits of $840 million. In three years time, he thinks the Kindle will represent more than 10 percent of both Amazon's sales and gross profits cheap cigarettes(for perspective, last year Amazon reported $19 billion in sales and $4.3 billion in gross profits). Meanwhile, Citi analyst Mark Mahaney for now is sticking with his 2010 projection of $1.2 billion in Kindle sales, which would account for over 4 percent of the total?that is next year. Mahaney isn't going out further than that yet, but he may soon "up that estimate a bit," he wrote in a note this morning. Why? One reason is because Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos threw out a tantalizing detail yesterday about the Kindle's growing traction: For the books available on the Kindle, unit sales are tracking at 35 percent the level of the same titles in print, up from 13 percent in February. Mahaney estimates that the Kindle already accounts for "about 10% of total North American book units," or or 4 million books sold during the first quarter out of a total of 38 million books, he tells me. Those 4 million Kindle books equated to an estimated $34 million in revenues during the quarter (which wholesale cigarettesdoesn't include sales of the Kindle device itself) and added 2 to 3 percent to Amazon's growth in media revenues for North America. Mahaney also thinks that the 35 percent sales figure suggests that Kindle owners are buying two books per month on the Kindle. Obviously, these are hardcore book readers, and that level of sales won't stay so high as the Kindle is used by more and more people beyond the early adopters (who in this case are tech-savvy bookworms). But the Kindle DX hints at a broader strategy. It is purpose built for the educational market?students who don't want to lug around heavy textbooks and can buy cheaper versions on the Kindle. (What would be really interesting would be a textbook subscription that gives students access to all of their books each semester, with an upgrade option to buy chapters or entire books if they want to keep them beyond that time period. But I digress). Surely, the Kindle DX is not the last Kindle in the pipeline. Amazon will keep rolling out upgrades and offshoots designed to appeal to different readers. For instance, the DX isn't perfect for magazines and newspapers. You really want a color screen for anything with photos and illustrations. But electronic ink555 cigarettes technology is moving in that direction, and then there is the prospect of a larger iPod Touch that would be perfect as both a Web tablet and an electronic reader. Already, Amazon has a Kindle app for the iPhone/iPod Touch. Despite the small size, I prefer it to the still-clunky Kindle just because I carry my iPhone with me all the time. I'd much rather read a book on an IPod Tablet than on a Kindle DX. And you know what? Amazon doesn't care because it is not in this to sell Kindles. It is in this to sell digital books, which have much higher margins than either paper books or the Kindle devices. Amazon could (and should) just as easily make a Kindle app for Android (especially with Android Netbooks coming out),Belomorkanal cigarettes Blackberry, Palm, and Windows Mobile. So how big can the Kindle get? It's not about the device, it's about the software. The only limit to how big it can get is the speed with which people can become comfortable reading books on screens.

Italy Premier¡¯s Drama Unfolds in Press

ROME ¡ª Less than a week after writing an open letter criticizing her husband for cavorting with much younger women, the wife of Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi said she wanted to file for divorce. ¡°I¡¯d like to close the curtain on our married life,¡± Mr. Berlusconi¡¯s wife, Veronica Lario, 52, told the center-left daily newspaper La Repubblica in an article published Sunday. ¡°I was forced to take this step,¡± she told the Turin daily newspaper La Stampa. ¡°I don¡¯t want to add anything else.¡± On Sunday, an assistant to Ms. Lario, Paola Giponi, confirmed the press reports, while Mr. Berlusconi released a brief statement to the ANSA news agency. ¡°It¡¯s a personal matter, and one that saddens me,¡± the prime minister said. ¡°It¡¯s a private issue that¡¯s best not discussed.¡± Yet this private issue has unfolded almost entirely through the Air Max 1 news media, with Ms. Lario taking her grievances to the press and Mr. Berlusconi parrying them there, too. The story has thrived in the personality-driven tabloid and political culture that Mr. Berlusconi helped create. If Ms. Lario does file for divorce, it is unclear whether Mr. Berlusconi, 72, will be affected politically. Despite colorful gaffes that would sink a politician elsewhere, he enjoys more power and popularity than ever, thanks to the disarray of his left-wing opposition and his brilliant reading of Italian sensibilities. In fact, part of Mr. Berlusconi¡¯s success lies in his ability to present himself at once as a devoted family man and as a consummate ladies¡¯ man, a contradiction embodied in his marriage to Ms. Lario. The two met in Milan in 1980, when she was an actress in a play called ¡°The Magnificent Cuckold¡± and he was a married, up-and-coming real estate tycoon. Mr. Berlusconi left his first wifeAir Max 180 II 2 for Ms. Lario. They had three children before marrying in a civil ceremony in 1990. The news of the impending breakup came after days of drama. On Tuesday, Ms. Lario wrote an open letter to the ANSA news agency complaining about her husband¡¯s roving eye, her second such public declaration in recent years. Ms. Lario criticized reports that Mr. Berlusconi¡¯s center-right coalition planned to nominate a slate of attractive young women for the European Parliament, including the star of a reality television show. Choosing candidates seemingly on the basis of their headshots more than their political experience is ¡°shamelessly trashy,¡± Ms. Lario said. She was also angered by press reports that Mr. Berlusconi had attended the 18th birthday party in Naples of Noemi Letizia, who has said in several recent interviews that she called the prime minister ¡°Daddy¡± and that he gave her a gold and diamond necklace. ¡°That surprised me,¡± Ms. Lario told ANSA. ¡°Because Air Max 180 TR+ he never attended the 18th birthday parties of his own children, even if he was invited.¡± Mr. Berlusconi countered that his wife has been subject to the ¡°manipulations¡± of the left-wing press. ¡°I¡¯m afraid that the ¡®signora¡¯ believed what she read in the newspapers,¡± ANSA quoted him as saying last Wednesday. In the ensuing days, the national conversation has been dominated by speculation about the nature of the relationship between Ms. Letizia and the prime minister. Mr. Berlusconi told the Italian press that Ms. Letizia was the daughter of a business acquaintance and that he stopped by the large party ¡°to raise a glass.¡± On Sunday, La Repubblica said that Ms. Lario had been contemplating divorce for years. In hiring a lawyer and opening proceedings, ¡°I would like to avoid conflict,¡± La Repubblica quoted her as saying. Mr. Berlusconi and Ms. Lario are rarely seen in public together, and there has been palace intrigue for years. In 2007, La Repubblica published a letter from Ms. Lario in which she demanded an apology from Mr. Berlusconi after news reports quoted him as praising the beauty of a showgirl whom he later Air Max 180+named equal opportunities minister. Ms. Lario, at the time, wrote: ¡°These are statements I consider damaging to my dignity.¡± The same day, Mr. Berlusconi, who was running for a third term as prime minister, quickly issued a public apology, which political analysts speculated was aimed at winning over female voters. ¡°Your dignity should not be an issue: I will guard it like a precious material in my heart even when thoughtless jokes come out of my mouth,¡± Mr. Berlusconi wrote then. He added: ¡°Forgive me,Air Max 360 however, I beg of you, and take this public testimony of private pride that submits to your anger as an act of love. One among many. A huge kiss. Silvio.¡±

CDC: Swine flu seen in 2 California children23 April 2009
CDC: Swine flu seen in 2 California children

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating two cases of swine flu detected in children in the San Diego, California, area last week. Swine flu is caused by a virus similar to the regular flu virus that circulates in people every year, but is a strain that is typically found only in pigs or in people who have direct contact with pigs. The children were infected with a virus known as swine influenza A H1N1, which has a unique combination of genes not previously seen in flu viruses in either humans or swine - although it shares similarities with a virus that has been circulating in pigs since 1999. Typically one person in the United States is infected with swine flu every one to two years, although there have been 12 cases in the three-year period between December 2005 and Jordan XXI sneakerJanuary 2009. Most of the time, people who get sick from swine flu have been in contact with pigs, and the virus doesn't spread from person to person. Since neither of the two children, a 10-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl, had contact with pigs, it "increases the possibility that human-to-human transmission of this new influenza virus has occurred," according to a CDC report. The girl did attend an agricultural fair four weeks before becoming sick, she said, but did not have any contact with pigs or other livestock. Family members of both children also had flu-like symptoms, but it's not clear whether they were infected with the same virus since samples weren't taken when they were ill. Both children had a fever and cough in late March, and one child vomited. The children, who live in the adjacent San Diego and Imperial counties in Southern California but had no known contact with one another, have since recovered. "We've only got the two cases to go on and both kids recovered on their own, so that's certainly good news," says Tom Skinner, a CDC spokesman. The boy did travel from California to Dallas, Texas, on a trip to visit family members and the CDC is reaching out to crew members on that flight to see whether any other people experiencedJordan XXII sneaker flu-like symptoms, says Skinner. "He was probably at the tail end of his illness, but yes, he was symptomatic," he says. "We're just reaching out to crew members at this point. Based on what we learn from that initial outreach, if we feel like we need to reach out to other passengers on the plane, we will." These types of investigations are designed to "get a better handle on just how transmissible this virus might be," says Skinner. "When we see the introduction of a new flu virus from animal into humans that's one of things we're interested in: understanding how efficiently is the virus transmitted and how sustainable is the virus transmission from person to person." The virus seems to be resistant to treatment with the antiviral drugs amantadine and rimantadine. It's not clear yet whether the virus is resistant to other drugs, such as oseltamivir and zanamivir. Skinner says "we're still early in the course of learning about it, but as far as the general public goes there's nothing they need to be doing differently today than what they were doingJordan XXIII sneaker yesterday when it comes to their knowledge and behavior about preventing flu." The most famous outbreak of swine flu in the United States occurred in 1976 in recruits at Fort Dix, New Jersey. The cases triggered fear of a pandemic - largely because the lethal 1918 flu pandemic was thought at the time to be a result of a swine flu mutation - that resulted in more than 40 million people being vaccinated. The program was later criticized when a swine flu pandemic did not materialize and a number of cases of vaccine-related side effects were reported.

Obama to take aim at credit card abuses20 April 2009
Obama to take aim at credit card abuses

By Caren Bohan WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama plans to crack down on deceptive credit-card industry practices that have saddled U.S. consumers with huge debts and soaring interest rates, U.S. officials said on Sunday. Top White House economic adviser Lawrence Summers Nike Air Tailwindsaid Obama would be "very focused in the very near term on a whole set of issues having to do with credit card abuses." "We need to do things to stop the marketing of credit in ways that addict people to it," Summers said in an interview on the NBC television talk show "Meet the Press." Summers, director of the White House National Economic Council, said the administration is concerned about practices that result in consumers being "deceived into paying extraordinarily high rates that they wouldn't have paid if they knew they were getting themselves into." Summers and other officials are scheduled to meet on Thursday at the White House with top executives of credit card companies. The meeting comes as lawmakers in the Democratic-led Congress have vented anger that banks with big credit card operations charging high interest rates and fees are the same institutionsNike Air Zoom Talache 1 getting government bailouts from U.S. taxpayers who use these credit cards. The House of Representatives and Senate are considering a credit card "bill of rights" that would limit the ability of credit card companies to raise interest rates on existing balances and require greater disclosure of terms. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke has spoken out against complexity in consumer lending practices that is designed to confuse customers and drive up lending fees. The Fed tightened rules on credit-card practices in December, but the proposed legislation would take that further. White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said credit-cardNike Free Woven 5.0 ND abuses were a priority for Obama, who highlighted the subject during his campaign last year. "We look forward to working with Congress on these issues," Psaki said.

Pressure on PM over e-mail slurs 13 April 2009
Pressure on PM over e-mail slurs

Damian McBride quit as a No 10 aide after his unfounded claims about Tory leader David Cameron and shadow chancellor George Osborne became known. Mr Cameron has demanded a public apology from the prime minister. A No 10 spokesman has said no-one else in Downing Street knew about the "juvenile and inappropriate" messages. But the Conservatives say that is not a good enoughAir Jordan 2009 sneaker explanation. They have demanded an inquiry as well as a guarantee that such material will never again be written in Downing Street. BBC political correspondent Laura Kuenssberg said there were rumblings among Labour backbenchers - some urging Mr Brown to do more to distance the party from the scandal. 'Into the gutter' The Tory leader was "absolutely furious" about the e-mails, his spokeswoman said. Cabinet Office Minister Liam Byrne says Mr Brown knew nothing of them. But Labour backbencher John McDonnell has called on Mr Brown toAir jordan 1 shoes act decisively by launching an independent inquiry into who was involved. "Smear tactics like this are not the Labour way," he said. "They drag the Labour Party into the gutter. They just add further to the undermining of the belief that Labour Party supporters have placed in our party." The e-mails were originally sent in January to former government spin doctor Derek Draper, who runs the LabourList blog and was proposing to set up Red Rag, a new gossip-led site. However, they came to the attention of Paul Staines, author of the "anti-politics" Guido Fawkes blog, who revealed their existence. Charles Clarke, a former home secretary, said the resignation was the end of the "Damian McBride issue", but did not address the wider problem of smear campaigns in politics. He added: "In the Labour Party there's the issue of the others on the e-mail ring that Damian had - Derek Draper and Charlie Whelan - and in the case of the Conservative Party, David Cameron's decision to recruit Andy Coulson - who had been the editor of the News of the World during the illegal bugging ofAir jordan 2 shoes the Royals scandal." Shadow foreign secretary William Hague demanded an apology from the prime minister, plus an investigation. He also called for an assurance that neither Damian McBride nor Derek Draper would work for the government or the Labour Party again. "This has been a deeply disturbing revelation about the corrupting culture of spin which is still at the heart of Downing Street," he told the BBC. Shadow home secretary Chris Grayling claimed the e-mails demonstrated a "structured plan" to publish "blatant lies" about opposition MPs. "It's a sign of something absolutely rotten at the heart of Gordon Brown's Downing Street," he told BBC News. "This is an exceptionally serious matter and he needs to explain immediately what happened. "The real question now is - was [Mr McBride] the only person involved in all of this?" Cabinet Office Minister Tom Watson was also alleged to have been copied in on the e-mails. However, Mr Watson said he had known nothing of the "completely inappropriate" messages and had no involvement in discussions to create the Red Rag site. 'Gossipy' "The first I was aware of the e-mail conversation that led to Damian McBride's resignation was when these were made known to Downing Street by national newspapers who had been givenAir jordan 3 shoes them by Paul Staines," he said. Mr Byrne also dismissed suggestions of an orchestrated smear campaign. "This was one private e-mail exchange between a couple of friends who were knocking backwards and forwards ideas," he said. "Mr McBride, having scribbled this stuff, decided that the right place for it was the waste basket," he added. Mr Staines has refused to reveal how the messages found their way to him, despite complaints from Mr Draper that they were private. Mr McBride described the first claim as a ''solid investigative story'', but the other three as ''mainly gossipy, and intended to destabilise the Tories". He added: ''Let's think about how to sequence these in with others'' - a suggestion that a longer-term plan to place stories was being hatched. Claims were also made against the Tory backbencher Nadine Dorries, who says she is consulting lawyers and wants a personal apology from the prime minister. Mr Draper has apologised to those mentioned in the e-mailsAir jordan 4 shoes and admitted "we should never really have considered the idea and I am sorry we did". "All I can do is absolutely promise that these stories were just daft ideas that never - and would never have - got off the drawing board," he wrote on his blog. He called on fellow bloggers to "commit to a new start" by avoiding personal attacks. Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair's former spin doctor, wrote in his blog that he had been struck not just by the "unpleasantness" of the e-mails, but also by their "incompetence". "McBride will be thinking that was his big mistake - writing it all down. His really big mistake was thinking it might be effective," Mr Campbell added.
